FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between a private GP and an NHS GP?

Our Private GP’s also work in the NHS. The main difference is that there is a fee for the service. You get longer appointments, easier access to appointments and often better continuity of care. Whilst still providing the same pragmatic evidenced based care you should be able to access in the NHS we can also offer more health promotion and disease screening options for our patients.

Our appointments can all easily be made online through our website where card payments are accepted. You can also pay by card or cash at reception in our clinic.

Yes, we have a choice of male and female GP’s to choose from who are all fully qualified and registered with the GMC. We have a broad range of experience and special interests between us.

This is easily done through our website by phoning or just turning up at the clinic. On the website there is a book and appointment button just follow the instructions.  The website will ask you for your details. The more medical information you provide helps our doctors provide you with the best care.

Yes, we have walk in and same day appointments almost every day. We intend to keep it this way even when we are busy, as we recognise that access to prompt care is one of the main priorities for many of our patients.

Yes and no. Referrals for urgent medical problems are OK but the NHS does not provide an easy and safe pathway for non-urgent outpatient referrals from the private sector. At Edinburgh GP we take pride in “owning” our patients care. There are ways we can facilitate getting you to an NHS clinic if that is your choice and it is the best place for your care. We want to work alongside to help the NHS so are very conscious not to “dump” private sector work back into the already overstretched system.

This is a question for your insurer. Some policies particularly if from overseas insurers will cover private GP consultations. Many UK policies do not and only offer an impersonal quick online GP service for their clients. This is why we are trying to keep our prices down at Edinburgh GP to make quality face to face GP consults more accessible.

Not at the moment and there is not much need in Edinburgh as we are lucky to have one of the best out of hours GP services in the UK via NHS 111.

Yes we can do a full range of lab tests through one of the best UK labs with most results next day, We can arrange for Imaging from any provider including those outside of Edinburgh if that is the best place for you. This can be X ray, MRI scans, CT scans or Ultrasounds.

Yes, we can prescribe anything that your NHS GP can prescribe. We can also support some medications which are difficult to get through the NHS if they are medically appropriate.

Usually the same day Monday to Friday and often within an hour or two of booking.

Yes we love seeing children. If they are very ill though (particularly if under 6 months old) then you may be better off presenting directly to the children’s hospital A&E. They have an amazing service and the waiting times in Edinburgh are not so bad.

We offer a wide range of services for individuals and corporate clients. These include:

  • Personalised health screening which can be combined with ongoing GP care.
  • Oil and Gas or RUK medicals.
  • Visa and pre-employment health forms.
  • Occupational Health (back to work) reports.

Yes we can. You just register and book in like anyone else. We work with some insurance providers directly but most need you to pay then claim it back. We can give you a receipt and report if needed.

We never share any information with anyone unless we have your consent. There is only one circumstance where we might break this golden rule and that is if we there is a serious risk to you or others. We are happy to share your information if you request it.

We can help with most issues if not directly then we can signpost or refer you to the best specialist for your needs. As GP’s we are expert medical generalists which means we have a very broad knowledge base and experience. We may not have all the answers immediately to hand, but we can usually move you in the right direction and with good continuity find solutions that help.

We are fully qualified doctors who are all registered with the General Medical Council. We all undergo annual appraisals to assess our fitness to practice. In addition we are a close-knit team and ensure quality by sharing our expertise in house with regular peer review sessions.

The business itself is registered and regulated by Health Improvement Scotland to ensure that our working environment is safe for staff and patients.

“Excellent experience with Dr. Richardson and the lady at the reception. I came for a routine health check-up and a blood test, and Dr. Richardson was able to answer all my questions, with great professionalism. The practice itself was beautiful and modern. I highly recommend it!”

“I have had several consultations with Dr David Richardson over the past year and am delighted to say, have felt completely listened to, and have had my health concerns thoroughly investigated without delay. The new surgery on Randolph Place is very chic, and the staff are welcoming and friendly. A great new service for Edinburgh.”
