Coil Fitting

What to expect

You will be given a 45 minute appointment.

  • We will ensure you fully understand your options, and the benefits and potential risks of your choice of coil.
  • The process can involve some temporary period like cramping pains. We will talk you through options for, and administer pain relief (analgesia).
Pain relief during coil fittings

As standard, we will always offer you pain relief for your coil fitting, you are welcome to proceed without this. If you opt for pain relief, we can explain the gel, spray and injection options available to you.

  • To ensure your comfort, our Doctor will be supported by a one of our team.
  • The process involves inserting a speculum into your vagina and then inserting the coil into the womb. 
  • Whilst most people are able to carry on with their daily activities as usual after this treatment, we understand that it can be stressful to some, and we have a private relaxation room, should you feel you want to take more time before leaving the Clinic.

What to BookCoil Fitting

Coil Fitting is £520 (this includes consultation and fitting time, your choice of pain relief if desired, and the coil itself. Also included in this price is a short follow up consultation which you can book at the time of your fitting appointment.

If you change your mind on choice of contraception, or indeed, decide not to go ahead with any fittings, we will refund the difference between this and a standard 45 minute GP consultation which is £250.

Coil Removal

What to expect

You will be given a 30 minute appointment.

  • Consultation to discuss rationale for removal, discuss alternative forms of contraception if appropriate and potential risks and benefits.
  • The procedure to remove the coil itself should take no longer than 5 minutes and is generally perceived to present brief and manageable short-term cramping.
  • On rare occasions threads may not be present and may have retracted into the womb. You can often feel for these threads yourself at home. Dr Williamson is one of a small handful of people in the Lothians who are able to do these more complex removals.
  • In this case, we recommend anaesthetic and will remove the coil with special thread retrievers or small foreceps. This is likely to be a longer appointment it will be explained to you before the removal that the price is higher as a result of the difference in procedure.

Implant Fitting

What to expect

You will be given a 30 minute appointment.

  • We will ensure you fully understand your options, and the benefits and potential risks of the implant.
  • Explanation of the fitting process and anaesthetic.
Pain relief during implant fittings

As standard, we will always offer you pain relief for your implant fitting, you are welcome to proceed without this. If you opt for pain relief, we can explain the gel, spray and injection options available to you.

  • Implant Fitting in our comfortable treatment room. The area into which your implant is inserted will be covered by a small steri strip
  • Most people are able to carry on with their daily activities as usual after this treatment, however it is common to have some bruising and tenderness at the insertion point which should settle quickly.

  • Treatment involves application of a local anaesthetic to the area and a small incision to remove the implant.
