Vasectomies

Our expert and affordable private procedure option to avoid long NHS waiting lists.

Vasectomy is a routine and straight forward procedure offering a permanent form of contraception for men. The procedure prevents sperm from entering your ejaculate by cutting the vas deferens tubes. It is the most effective form of contraception and has a failure rate of less than 1 in 2500. It does not affect sexual function or interrupt sex in any way.

We are fortunate to have Dr Becky Cheeseborough, a highly experienced GP surgeon with over 5 years of vasectomy experience with the NHS and expertly performs 100’s of procedures a year working with us to perform this procedure for you.

Process

  • Initial Face to Face Consultation: To discuss your options, and ensure you understand the process and associated risks, and to carry out a simple and non-invasive physical check.
  • If you and our Doctor believe that vasectomy is the right option for you, we will schedule you for your procedure, an hour long out-patient appointment which will take place in our Clinic.
  • We will send you a home testing kit with instructions 12 weeks after your procedure to arrange sperm testing to ensure the success of the procedure.
  • A second home test can be sent after a 4 to 8 weeks after this first test to further ensure success.

What to expect during your appointment and after-care

  • We will review the discussion held in our initial face to face consultation and consent you for your procedure.
  • A local anaesthetic is injected through the skin of the scrotum (it is not injected into the testes) to numb the skin and around the tubes. After a couple of minutes, the anaesthetic will become fully effective, and your vasectomy will be carried out.
  • The procedure itself should take around 20 to 30 minutes. Our Clinician will make one, or sometimes two, small incision(s) in the scrotum to access, cut, and block the vas deferens tubes. Skin sutures (stitches) are sometimes required to close the wound but are frequently not necessary.
  • After the process is completed, we invite you to take a seat in our private recovery room. We request that you arrange a lift to take you home and do not drive immediately after the procedure.

After-care:

  • Over the counter painkillers, such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, are advised to be taken for a few days after the procedure. It is recommended to rest for 48 hours afterwards, avoid anything physically strenuous and take a few days off work. For men doing a manual job, they will require up to 2 weeks off work.
  • We also request that you carry out one sperm tests which should take place 12 after your procedure, and we offer the option to take a second reassurance sperm test at 16 – 20 weeks post procedure. We will contact you to arrange sperm testing. These tests can be done at home and sent directly to our partner who will carry out testing and are included in the overall price.
  • You should use alternative forms of contraception until we have the results of your sperm test.
