This article from Dr Shona Williamson, provides a useful overview of the options available as well as explaining the benefits of both copper and hormonal coils. Helping you to choose what coil is right for you.

Choosing contraception can feel overwhelming, but intrauterine contraception, commonly known as “the coil”, remains one of the most effective, low-maintenance options available today. Whether you are choosing a coil for the first time, replacing an existing one, or considering it as part of HRT, we’re here to guide you through it.

Here at Edinburgh GP, we offer a full range of coil options fitted by Dr Shona Williamson, one of Edinburgh’s most experienced women’s health GPs.

Helping you to choose what coil is right for you.

Copper Coil (IUD)

Hormone-free, long-lasting protection.

How it works:

The copper coil prevents pregnancy by repelling sperm and preventing fertilisation. It also makes the womb lining less receptive to implantation.

Duration:

Available in 5 or 10-year options.

Periods:

Because it contains no hormones, your periods will follow your usual cycle, though they may become heavier, longer, or more painful in some cases.

Emergency contraception:

It’s the only coil option that can also be used for emergency contraception, up to 5 days after unprotected sex.

This is a great option if you prefer a hormone-free method and want a highly effective, long-term solution.

Hormonal Coils (IUS)

Contraception plus gynaecological benefits.

Hormonal coils contain progestogen (a synthetic form of progesterone), which:

  • Thickens the cervical mucus to block sperm
  • Thins the womb lining to prevent implantation
  • Often reduces menstrual flow or stops periods altogether

Additional benefits:

  • Helps manage heavy, painful periods
  • Used as part of HRT (for endometrial protection)
  • Can improve PMT symptoms in some women

Things to note:

  • You may still ovulate and notice your monthly cycle
  • Spotting is common in the first few months
  • Hormonal side effects are rare and usually mild

What to Expect from the Fitting

The procedure is the same regardless of which coil you choose. It’s similar to having a smear test and takes just a few minutes.

To help reduce any discomfort:

  • You can take ibuprofen and paracetamol beforehand
  • We offer local anaesthetic options (gel or injection)
  • Most people describe the process as uncomfortable, not painful

After fitting, it’s normal to experience some cramping or spotting, which usually settles within 24 hours.
