Choosing to have a vasectomy is an important decision. For many men, it offers a simple, reliable and permanent form of contraception that removes the worry of unplanned pregnancy and allows couples to enjoy greater peace of mind.

At Edinburgh GP, we understand that many men feel anxious about the procedure before they attend. The good news is that a modern vasectomy is a quick, safe procedure performed under local anaesthetic, and most men tell us afterwards that it was much easier than they had expected.

Our aim is to make the whole experience as comfortable, discreet and straightforward as possible.

Why Choose Edinburgh GP?

An Experienced GP
Your vasectomy will be performed by our highly experienced GP surgeon who performs weekly vasectomy clinics in the NHS and has performed 100’s of procedures.

Experience matters. A skilled clinician helps ensure the procedure is efficient, comfortable and carried out to the highest clinical standards, while taking the time to answer your questions and put you at ease.

A Calm, Comfortable Environment
Unlike a busy hospital, our private clinic offers a relaxed, welcoming setting where you will receive personalised care throughout your visit.

From your first consultation to your follow-up advice, you’ll be looked after by a friendly and experienced clinical team who understand that privacy and reassurance are important.

Many men comment afterwards that the anticipation was far worse than the procedure itself.

Quick Procedure, Fast Recovery
A vasectomy usually takes around 20 – 30 minutes and is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning you can return home shortly afterwards.

Most men experience only mild discomfort during the procedure, with some aching or bruising for a few days afterwards. This is usually well controlled with simple painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen and supportive underwear.

Most patients can expect to:

  – Resume light activities after a few days
  – Return to the gym after around one week
  – Resume more strenuous exercise after approximately two weeks
  – Return to sexual activity when comfortable, usually after about one week

Recovery times vary slightly between individuals, but serious complications are uncommon.

One of the Most Effective Forms of Contraception
A vasectomy is over 99.8% effective at preventing pregnancy once follow-up semen testing has confirmed that no sperm remain in the ejaculate.

It is important to remember that vasectomy is not effective immediately.

You will need to continue using alternative contraception until your post-vasectomy semen analysis confirms the procedure has been successful. We will explain exactly when this test should be performed and guide you through the follow-up process.

Excellent Value
Private care doesn’t have to mean hospital prices.

Our vasectomy service offers excellent value and is much more affordable than in larger private hospitals, while providing the same high standards of clinical care in a more personal environment.

Convenient City Centre Location
Our clinic is centrally located in Edinburgh with excellent transport links and nearby parking, making it easy to attend your appointment whether you live locally or are travelling from elsewhere in Scotland.

Discreet and Confidential
We recognise that many men prefer a private and discreet service.

Your consultation, procedure and follow-up are handled with complete confidentiality in a professional, respectful environment.

Your Safety Comes First
Before proceeding, we’ll discuss:

  – Whether permanent contraception is the right choice for you
  – The benefits and limitations of vasectomy
  – The procedure itself
  – Possible risks and complications
  – Recovery and aftercare
  – Follow-up semen testing
  – When it is safe to stop using other contraception

You’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and make an informed decision.

Why Men Choose Edinburgh GP
Patients choose Edinburgh GP because we offer:

  – Experienced GP-led vasectomy service
  – Personal, continuity of care
  – A comfortable, discreet, centrally located private clinic
  – Minimal waiting times
  – Excellent value compared with many private hospitals
  – Comprehensive aftercare
