Let’s start with the name.
“No-scalpel vasectomy” sounds reassuring. It’s also slightly misleading.
Sadly, nobody has invented a way of performing a vasectomy using fresh air, positive thinking and absolutely no instruments whatsoever.

What the term really describes is a minimally invasive vasectomy technique. Rather than making conventional surgical incisions, the surgeon makes a very small opening in the skin to access the vas deferens – the tubes that carry sperm. The aim is simple: minimal tissue disruption, a tiny wound and a straightforward recovery.

At Edinburgh GP, this is the technique we use.

Small procedure. Experienced hands. Discreet surroundings. Minimal fuss.

When it comes to vasectomies, experience matters

Vasectomy is a relatively small procedure – but that doesn’t mean you want it performed by someone who only does one occasionally.

Our vasectomies are performed by an experienced GP surgeon, Dr Becky Cheesbrough,  who carries out vasectomies regularly as part of her weekly clinical work and sees a high volume of patients.

That regular, hands-on experience is what really matters.  Our experienced clinician performs the same procedure frequently, developing familiarity with the little details that make the experience as efficient, comfortable and reassuring as possible.

For a straightforward procedure such as vasectomy, there is no doubt that regular procedural experience is particularly valuable.

A vasectomy without the hospital experience

We have also deliberately tried to make the whole experience feel rather less clinical.

There are no enormous hospital corridors, no busy surgical admissions unit and no feeling that you have embarked on a major medical expedition.

Instead, you come to our discreet central Edinburgh clinic, meet the doctor who will perform your procedure before you commit. Following this (usually a week or two later) you have it carried out in our calm, comfortable surroundings.

We know that very few men actively look forward to having a vasectomy.

Our job is to make sure that afterwards you think:

“Actually, that was nowhere near as bad as I expected.”

And then you can go home, take it easy for a few days and enjoy the rare opportunity to be specifically instructed by a doctor not to do anything strenuous.
